Heathens 2026

Synopsis

A groundbreaking 2024 University of Chicago study, presented at the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, has uncovered something stunning: more than 50 million American Christians now conceal private doubts about their faith—a quiet crisis of doubt hidden behind Sunday smiles. This nationally representative research—the first of its kind—reveals the emotional and social toll of concealment: anxiety, shame, family rupture, and the quiet unraveling of identity in communities where belief defines belonging.
